Thank you for asking about this!
Actually... I have been trying to decide what to do about my track.
I was thinking of getting a paint-pen.
Where do you find this stuff?
Lajos... Do you think it is useable with Micro-Track road-bed track?

I was curious if any one has used Micro Engineering's Rail Weathering Solution?
Jerry!

Of course. It works with turnouts too, but the frogs are more resistant to the solution, they need to be painted.

Alex,
Here is the site if found it on. I'm sure other sites carry it as well but I haven't had time to research.
www.nscalesupply.com/MEE/MEE-Track.html Scroll down towards the bottom.
You couldn't ask for a better endorsement than one from Lajos.
I'm glad I raised the question.
Jerry
Oops Just realized they indicated out of stock, but at least it gives you an idea of price.

The rail weathering solution is the same as Blacken-It, which is another product sold for blackening metals. Most scratchbuilders are familiar with Blacken-It, as it's been around for many years. Blacken-It is available from Micro-Mark:
www.micromark.com/BLACKEN-IT-4-FL-OZ,7267.html
You might be able to get similar products cheaper through a stained glass supply source; it's also used to blacken the leading. Stained glass suppliers offer solutions for adding subtle color to the process, including black, dark brown, dark blue, etc. The black and brown are useful for rail.
Caution: this stuff is nasty. It contains acids that you should avoid touching. Use with lots of ventilation, and have plenty of fresh water on hand in case of spills or skin contact. Also make sure you thoroughly rinse the track after using it, because if any remains, it will slowly corrode the metal and leave greeish patches.

I use BLACKEN-IT for my Marklin catenary wire. It works like a charm! Yes, it is nasty so watch yourself when using it.
