Here is my contest entry. I didn't have time to put it on a diorama like I had planned. I just wanted to represent the cabin as it stands. I didn't include the awesome car by DKS, but if you look closely the picture of it from the instructions is hung in the house. I tried to make the layout as close to the cabin as it sits now. I didnt have time to make the two chairs and the smoke stack is a bit bent because I didnt want to drill another hole in the roof.

This is what I have done...

I have tried to incorporate the Tabor Cabin in my layout as an inspiration for a small mining village high up in the mountains.
The Cabin is built as is with a 12V ricegrain bulb inside, two of the windows have curtains (although in the photos they just look whitewashed) and one is boarded up. I painted the cabin with a combination of powdered pastels and a brown stain, the windows are painted with the occasional rust and bare metal awnings. The roof got a corrugated steel look with stains of green algae, rust and years of weather exposure.

I have used the cabin as site office for the mine and a white cat is enjoying the sun on a crate in front of the house. The season is late spring / early summer with the apple tree in full bloom, a local farmer is repairing his tractor in the small field behind the living quarters where a woman is returning home with the groceries. Outside the local, very small coop there is a beaten down truck waiting for my gaspump to arrive on monday with UPS from Shapeways (I still lack a few details and inhabitants).

The mine hoist is built from scratch freely after a few photos of the Matchless Mine I found on a heritage site online and my girlfriend was very patient while she attached the cables for the lift to the hoist and the steam donkey. The steam donkey is built by my brother in paper (same as the tractor and wagon in the top right corner). The main idea is that the hoisting system brings up the mine carts from the mine up onto the small railway that leads out onto the "pier" where the carts can be emptied into bigger hoppers.

The rail is MTL flex.

I will after this weekend post a few more photos of how the build went.

This is my contest entry. I wanted to make a small mine diamama with the other buildings of the mine but i just got to busy so i just did the kit.Karin did a great job on the kit.I found it very easy to put together and all the pieces fit perfectly.
I stained the kit with dark walnut stain and weathered the walls with the supplied chaulk and colored pencils. The roof i used a silver paint sharpie and weathered again useing just the supplied chaulk. I think it gave a good looking rust affect i was after. I also scalloped the edges of the roof to give the look that parts had rusted away or been damaged over time.
Thanks and enjoy

Thank you everyone for entering into the Stonebridge Models Tabor Cabin Contest!

The contest is now closed to entries, and I must say there are some very nice models on display. Unfortunately there is no entry for the kitbash category, since there were five entries for the straight build.

Stonebridge Models has generously donated the Palmer Box Company laserkit for the prize. If you look at Karin's mine complex photos, this is the larger building of the mine complex.

I will now pass the photos on to our judges for final judgement to declare the winner.

Good luck everyone!

John

First I would like to thank everyone for entering the Tabor Cabin Contest. The judges enjoyed how one kit could be 'interpreted' differently by the modelers. But what really pushed the vote for Zac White was the interior details of his cabin. The judges liked the wallpaper, the bed, pictures, and the other interior details to allow open viewing.

So, I would like to congratulate Zac White for winning the "Best Concept Build" category of the Tabor Cabin Contest. I will get your email address and send it to Karin Snyder of Stonebridge Models.

Again, thank you to Stonebridge Models for sponsoring the Tabor Cabin Contest and thank you to our contestants.

John

Update!

Karin from Stonebridge Models stated she has two Palmer Box Company kits to give away, and since there was no entry in the "Kit Bash" Category, she would like to give it to the second place entry which is Dana Meinders Tabor Cabin entry. Dana, congratulations on your build, and thank you SBM for your generosity. Dana, I will pass on your email address to Karin too!

Many thanks to Karin for her generosity in allowing 2nd place to be prizeworthy. She works very hard and has a terrific product. I have my prize and can't wait to get started. Thanks, too, to the judges.
