AZL GP 30 questions was created by seldredg
I have a new AZL GP30. It runs 60% faster in reverse than forward at a given setting, and it runs slightly quieter and smoother in one direction compared to other. I can change this characteristic by reversing the trucks, which doesn't affect the speed thing. The speed thing is common across three different controllers.

Also, it won't run on a snail controller. Too slow to pull anything.

Is this normal behavior for an AZL? My other locos are Marklin, and a Tenshodo, which run the same forwards and back.

It has also not worked with the body on, but the lights do. I seem to have fixed this by slightly burnishing the foil on the topinside of the body shell.

I haven't contacted AZL because I can't find a contact. The website is under construction. I have contacted the retailer but am still waiting for a reply.

Some of the GP30s have had problems because the controller board has come loose in shipping. Rather than try to summarize what I've read to do let me point you to Rob the AZL distributor: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. He'll be able to get you the best info.
I can tell you that what you descibe is not normal and the one GP30 I own runs well, in either direction.

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your GP30. This is not typical. The GP30 should run fine in both directions.

Try this. First, make sure the board is pushed all of the way up in the clips on the chassis. These can come loose. Typically, you will see lights but no movement. But since you are getting movement, I think your board is set properly. The next item to check is the two copper clips on the sides of the board. Make sure this are on the board correctly. I have found crimping these tight on the board can help.

If the shell is causing the loco not to run, you are right. The foil cover on the light housing can touch the board and cause it to short. This is rare, but can happen.

Let me know if any of these steps help. If not, feel free to contact me offline. We can work towards a solution or replacement. My email address is:
