Who...How...What... was created by ULie
Hello all,

this should become a little quiz game.

The rules are easy. I will post the first question and who posts the correct answer is the next to post a question. Questions can be in plain text or a picture or another hint. They should be able to be answered by reseach through any open source. And of course they should at least be remotly connected to railroads or modelrailroading.

If a question isn't answered in a resonable time, then an additional hint would be nice.

Now for the first question:

This is a railroad that is rather old, in fact one of the oldest in the world, and certainly in it's own country. During it's history the railroad changed gauge twice and used different coupling systems. Part of it's current rolling stock is used material from a darker  place. And finally for part of it's line which is rather short it is mandatory to have a item on board that is normally not found on a railroad.

What is the name of the railroad or where can it be found, and what is this special item?

GreetingZ, HilZen,

Uwe

well, the railline we're looking for is on an isle, and about the:

Part of it's current rolling stock is used material from a darker place.

means complete rolling stock like car or engine...

And it is from the same country, but not from the isle where it is used now (well, the country itself is also an isle...). Since the harbour isn't very big the engines had to be brought to the isle in parts, and cars had been brought to the isle by landing craft...

The Island Line from the Isle of Wight. They use old subway cars as passenger cars. This is in part due to a tunnel which has too low of a clearance for standard rail cars. Some of these cars are from 1938.

They also have special yellow warning panels for the benefit of track workers.

Hello Jeremy,

The Island Line from the Isle of Wight is close, but sorry no. The line I want to hear is some years older, and much shorter too. But they use the same kind of cars. And the special item I asked about isn't for the benefit of other people standing beside the rails, but it is meant for the benefit of the driver in case that it is needed. As a hint I admit that the item wasn't on board when an accident happened where the item could have been helpful. But after the accident the item was mandatoy, but this kind of accident never happend again yet... ...and that for now almost 100 years...

Uwe, Is it the Alderney Railroad on the Isle of Guernsey? And the item was a life perserver? Cheers, Jim CCRR:unsure:

This is a good thread- At least I'm learning some new things in searching-- Didn't realize Switzerland has the longest land tunnels in the world. and why would a small island need a railway.

OK, it's not on the island of Guernsey, but the island of Alderney is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. And yes they have to carry life belts on the engine...

That website will also answer Fred asking why does a small island like that need a railway . Well there are some islands that are even smaller, which are connected to the main land by some kind of railway... ..but that is something for a later question, when I will be lucky enough to find the answer for a question.

Because now it is Jims turn to find something for us...B)

Sorry Fred, This is a poor back country line. They do have one shack for supplies and tools. So that is not the answer. Cheers, Jim CCRR:P
